“I’ll sleep.” /yawns and walks off
“How is it my fault if you fall and die?” She crossed her arms looking away from him. stubbornly. “It’s me if anyone to be worried about.” What was he going to do if she fell and collapsed from sleep deprivation?
“Why do you-” his sentence was interrupted by the sound of several leafs shaking and touching each other. He made a quick turn to right, where the noise was coming from, as his eyes were fixed at the bushes. But then, the empty backyard sank into the deathly silence again, instantly. Zero frowned “Did you hear that?”
Hitomi thought about what Zero said, and relief overcame her. So she wasn’t going to become one of those… things. Whatever that was that attacked her. But something seemed to be troubling Zero. A certain pain deep in his heart. Perhaps painful memories?
The answer to her first question was answered last, but maybe it was because he, himself, did not know the answer. But once again, his answer relieved her. Not that she didn’t think he was bad in the first place. It was just the way he stood there, the way he looked. He didn’t have that blood lust in his eyes. He had restraint. Which was what that child before did not have.
“Zero…” She began, thinking about how he seemed so tempted by her long, pale neck. Her fingers still lingered on the bloody bandage on her neck, picking at the sides a little.
What was she doing? Hitomi wanted to help him, but would this potentially kill her if Zero lost control? Had he ever lost control?
All of this was still a shock to her, but she stared at him, still not finishing her sentence. “Are you in pain?”
He definitely was. He had been in pain for 5 years and his deathly suffering was growing stronger and stronger everyday. Every event he had been through, every person he had known seemed to add to his misery and his desire of revenge by turning against him.
He didn’t need anyone to feel sorry for him. He didn’t need anyone’s mercy or helping hand. The pitiful look on people’s eyes towards him, whispers that starts when he’s on sight… The sentence, being repeated silently, poor boy. His horrific life story, being told again and again, from person to person, until there weren’t many who didn’t know… All of those had happened when he stepped in the Association for the first time and had made him sick. It had the same effect even after all those years.
Hitomi’s question was still hanging on the air without an answer, and it would probably stay like that. Zero kept his silence, to avoid another pitiful look.
Then he noticed what Hitomi was doing, and about to do. Her fingers were touching the sides of the bandage slightly, ready to open it. Her eyes were fixed on Zero’s, waiting a response from him, but the looks in the deep blue surface seemed hesitant about her action.
“Don’t touch it!” he yelled, “It… could be bad for the wound,” actually his main concern was not that at all, not at the slightest.
“I got a call from the Association. Gonna be back later.”
“Your so selfish Zero!” She looked away from him, trying to figure out how mad he would be if she kicked him. “I don’t sleep either. I swear. Sometimes I think you just like the title prefect. Does protecting the school mean nothing to you?”
He sighed “You won’t give up will you?” and yawned again as he was trying to straighten up “Okay, but if I fall on the ground and die, you are the guilty one.”
“…Your… just going to lay there?” She shook her head before stomping her foot against the ground. “You can’t just be lazy about protecting the school!”
“I haven’t had a proper rest for nearly a week now,” he yawned as he rubbed his eyes “How do you think I can protect when I don’t even have the power to stand.”
“Who are you?”
